Talking about what you see in picture books is a great way of making little chatterboxes!
Here are some ideas to spark a conversation. I think of them as PEAR 🍐
🍐Prompt
🌟Pause and let them fill in the blanks: the cat sat on the ....
🌟Ask WH- questions: What colour is that flower? Who has he seen? How do you think she feels?
🌟Remember: what did we see behind the big tree? What happens next?
🌟Relate it to life: Your brother does that too. You felt nervous about starting nursery too.
🍐Expand what they say: if they say “ball” you respond “yes, it’s a blue ball”. This helps them learn the next steps of making sentences.
🍐Acknowledge what the child says. A bit of positive reinforcement goes a long way!
🍐Repeat what they say back to them. Simple but shows you’ve heard and understood their contribution and demonstrates turn-taking.
🌟Don’t feel you need to use them all absolutely all of the time! Pick and choose whatever feels most natural to you and your little ones in each particular moment!🌟
Let me know how you get on and what works best for you!
